Pokhran by Uday Singh.
Hey my bookish sweethearts!
Book Review : Pokhran by Uday Singh.
'POKHRAN' by Uday Singh is one of the books that really surprised me with its heart aching storyline, because I didn't have great expectations before picking up this book, but it turned out to be an exquisite novella. If you are very much into the plots which revolve around war and the consequences of fatal nuclear tests, I would recommend this book to you. The story is not weaved with pompous language and profound plot, it is an easy and sensible read.
The storyline of POKHRAN revolves around Chaitanya, a young boy who endures his father's scornful attitude towards him in his tender age. His father Paramvir has lost his wife in 1974, initially, he thinks that his wife's death is natural due to the labor pain, later he realises that the fatal nuclear test in Pokhran has caused his wife's death and Chaintanya was born as a crippled child because of 'Smiling Buddha' nuclear test in Pokhran. Paramvir realises that the media has only covered the success of the nuclear test and ignored its fatal consequences.
The indifference of politicians and media enrages Paramvir and he inculcates resilience in Chaitanya with his scornful attitude. Chaitanya on the other hand, encounters the religious riots and the death of innocents in his childhood, he becomes compassionate and determined young man who wants to help discriminated and ignored people. But the society treats him cruelly and grabs his loved ones from him, which makes Chaintanya transform his stoic disposition. Chaitanya connects the dots of Pokhran nuclear test, did he take revenge on the selfish politicians and scientists behind the fatal nuclear test?
The uniqueness of this novella is, it gives answer to this question in the very first page. But the last chapter resolves the reader's curiosity. Uday Singh has written a sensible story in a lucid language. Beginners can also choose this enthralling novel, it is a page turner. The story elaborates the consequences of nuclear tests, religious riots. The character sketch is revolutionary and pragmatic. Recommending this book to everyone, no exceptions.
