A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth

'A Suitable Boy' by Vikram Seth.

Review🥀

' A Suitable Boy' is one of my most anticipated reads in this year. I was perplexed to review it, quite irresolute about reviewing this magnificent piece.

This is not merely a story of four families, this grand novel has the essence of racial conflicts, cultural differences and distinctions of societies.

The different characters and their temperaments in post colonial India is astonishing.

The storyline revolves around the families of Mehras, Kapoors, Khans and Chatterjis.

Finding a suitable boy for Lata is the theme of this grandeur novel, the political conflicts and the distinctions of classes run behind the theme.

Rupa Mehra, a cantankerous woman will be one of the  characters who would get on every reader's nerves. Arun the eldest son is indifferent and unsentimental, Lata is a prudent young lady who is not allowed to choose her husband, who was tethered in the strict norms of Rupa Mehra,  her life depicts the undemonstrative life of educated women in the post colonial peroid. On the contrary, Meenakshi's demeanour is maverick and voguish.

The political conflicts and heated arguments about zamindari system among politicians were intricate and edifying. The Khans and Kapoors establish the typical politicians' families, the hypocrisy of politicians and the racial conflicts in politics. (It was way better than the current situation in our country). Maan, son of Mahesh Kapoor, the state minister of revenue, is an indolent young man whom I totally loathed!

Chatterjis on the other hand, are progressive. Amit, a connoisseur of poems, would astonish you and annoy you at the same time!! The tale of Saeeda Bhai is interwoven in the complex stories of four families.

'A Suitable Boy' is a literary masterpiece. A refined Indian historical fiction. Vikram Seth has adorned every chapter with incredible imageries and brilliant character sketch. 20th anniversary edition tempted me to pick this book up for my reading goal. I immensely enjoyed the grandeur of the storyline. The plot was enlightening and profound.

I got delved into this massive novel for eleven days, It was one of the amazing reading experiences I had!!
