Review of 'An American Marriage' by Tayari Jones
The story is about a young couple Roy and Celestial. They have stepped into the institution of marriage and before knowing its essence, both are drifted apart! Roy is incarcerated for the a sexual assault which he actually didn't commit. Their dreams shatter when he goes to jail.
The story moves in the multiple narration to elaborate the view points of every character. The plotline revolves around three characters Celestial, Roy and their mutual friend Andre. I really liked this multiple narration, the readers can discern the emotions, longings and insecurities of every character through this multiple point of view. A part of this novel is inscribed in the letters. The letters are written by Roy to Celestial are really heart wrecking and pathetic. ✏️CHARACTER SKETCH :
Let me talk about the character sketch of Celestial which I disliked, I cannot really understand why she is taking certain decisions in her life. Her emotions are superficial and blunt, while talking about the character sketch of Roy, it is vivid and not obscure. ✏️Writing Style:
Writing style is the greatest device that fascinated me in this book. The lines are so apt and inscribed in impeccable contemplation. Literary fiction lovers would treasure it.
