PALACE OF ILLUSIONS BY CHITRA BANERJEE.
“A PROBLEM BECOMES A PROBLEM ONLY IF YOU BELIEVE IT TO BE SO. AND OFTEN OTHERS SEE YOU AS YOU SEE YOURSELF”
“Palace of illusions” is one of my favourite mythological novels, not only because it discourses my favourite epic, but because it discourses the epic from another perspective. I believe in perspectives, perspectives can change the whole story, perspectives alter the way you look at someone’s dispositions, sometimes perspectives turn the history topsy-turvy. The story of Mahabarat(Indian Epic) is retold in this novel from the perspective of Draupadi who is also known as Panchaali
The portrayal of other characters are from the perspective of Panchaali, she narrates her early life, her marriage with five pandavas, kurukshetra war etc., Her views of the people around her including Krishna who is an incarnation of lord Vishnu are astounding, Panchaali is indefatigable character unlike the general portrayals of women characters from other epics. “Palace of illusions” is the most admirable narrative because of the relentless thoughts of Panchaali about her conscience and unbarred infuriation against Gauravas that destroys their entire kingdom. A woman’s wrath against coercion and humiliation destroys the clan. I wish the wrath of the men and women against the rape and molestations should demolish the sick minded people, rapists and molesters.
